Lección 1 — Hola, ¿qué tal?
(8 days, including one for testing)


   IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES

  1. Introduce yourself and present the course syllabus.
  2. Familiarize your students briefly with the VISTAS textbook, video program, and student ancillary package [Student Textbook/Instructor's Annotated Edition, pp. xiv-xxviii]. For more information, see Orienting Students to the Student Textbook [Instructor's Annotated Edition, p. IAE-11].
  3. Present the Lección 1 objectives [Student Textbook/Instructor's Annotated Edition, p. 1]. Use the lesson opener photo to orient students to the topic of basic greetings, as suggested in Lesson Preview [Instructor's Annotated Edition, p. 1].
  4. Preview the Contextos section [Student Textbook/Instructor's Annotated Edition, pp. 2-3] by explaining and modeling some basic greetings, as suggested in Before Presenting Contextos [Instructor's Annotated Edition, p. 2].

   ASSIGNMENT

  1. Have students read the Contextos section [Student Textbook/Instructor's Annotated Edition, pp. 2-3].
  2. Have students prepare Práctica activities 4 and 5 [Student Textbook/Instructor's Annotated Edition, pp. 3-4] to go over orally during the next class.


   IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES

  1. Chat with students using basic greetings from Contextos [Student Textbook/Instructor's Annotated Edition, pp. 2-3], as suggested in Present [Instructor's Annotated Edition, p. 2]. Model correct pronunciation as needed.
  2. Prepare the class for Práctica activity 1 [Student Textbook/Instructor's Annotated Edition, p. 3] by having students guess the questions that would elicit the responses shown in this activity, as suggested in 1 Warm-up [Instructor's Annotated Edition, p. 3]. Then play the corresponding listening section using the Student Cassette/CD and go over the activity with the class.
  3. Go over Práctica activity 4 [Student Textbook/Instructor's Annotated Edition, p. 4] with the class.
  4. Go over Práctica activity 5 [Student Textbook/Instructor's Annotated Edition, p. 4] with the class. Then have students find the titles of respect used in this activity, as recommended in Suggestion [Instructor's Annotated Edition, p. 4].
  5. Before your students do Comunicación activity 7 [Student Textbook/Instructor's Annotated Edition, p. 5], have them brainstorm about who the people in illustration are and what they are talking about, as suggested in 7 Warm-up [Instructor's Annotated Edition, p. 5].
  6. If you have time, have students do Situaciones activity 8 [Student Textbook/Instructor's Annotated Edition, p. 5] in groups of three.
  7. Preview the Fotonovela section [Student Textbook/Instructor's Annotated Edition, pp. 6-7] by telling students they will be reading about a group of students that goes on a trip together.

   ASSIGNMENT

  1. Have students read the Fotonovela section [Student Textbook/Instructor's Annotated Edition, pp. 6-7].
  2. Have students prepare Reacciona a la fotonovela activities 1 and 2 [Student Textbook/Instructor's Annotated Edition, p. 8] to go over orally during the next class.

   ADDITIONAL PRACTICE OPTIONS

  1. Have students do the Contextos section in Workbook Activities [Student Activities Manual, pp. 1-2].
  2. Have students do the Contextos section in Laboratory Activities [Student Activities Manual, p. 217].
  3. Have students work through the Contextos section on the Interactive CD-ROM.
