3-Quarter System

IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES
- Put students in small groups. Review the uses of the subjunctive presented in Lección 5 by having one student choose a verb or expression from Estructura 5.1, 5.2, or 5.3; the other students must create a sentence using the verb and expression, followed by the subjunctive or indicative, as appropriate. Have students alternate roles.
- Present the painting and quote on the Lecturas section opener. Present the vocabulary list, modeling the Spanish words and expressions.
- Have students discuss the Conexión personal questions for 1 x 1 = 1, pero 1 + 1 = 2 in pairs. Have them read Contexto cultural and ask them what they think the play’s title may imply.
- Direct students’ attention to Sobre el autor. Ask them to look for the elements of tragedy and humor in the play as they read.
- Read the first scene of 1 x 1 = 1, pero 1 + 1 = 2 aloud with the class. Ask students to describe the setting and each character and to reflect on the author’s purpose. Have them summarize in one or two lines the main issues presented in the scene. Ask them what they think will happen in the following two scenes.
- Collect and correct the list of recommendations that students wrote for A escribir.
ASSIGNMENT
- Read Antes de leer and study Vocabulario for 1 x 1 = 1, pero 1 + 1 = 2.
- Read 1 x 1 = 1, pero 1 + 1 = 2.
- Find specific examples of tragedy and humor in the play and decide on their purpose. (Refer to Análisis literario.)
- Prepare Después de leer activities 1, 2, and 3 for 1 x 1 = 1, pero 1 + 1 = 2 for the next class.
- Go to the ENFOQUES web site and prepare the Lecturas activity to be submitted electronically before class on Day 12.
