Day 3

IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES
  1. Review Expresiones útiles by asking students questions using the expressions.
  2. Work through the Práctica y Comunicación activities for Estructura 11.1 with the class. Students will work in small groups for activity 3.
  3. Work through the Práctica y Comunicación activities for Estructura 11.2 with the class. Students will work in pairs for activities 2 and 3.
  4. Present the painting and quote on the Lecturas section opener. Ask students how the quote can be applied to the picture. Use the suggestions found in Additional Teaching Suggestions for Lecturas in the Instructor’s Resource Manual to direct/expand the discussion. Ask students how the quote and picture tie into the lesson theme, La tecnología y la ciencia.
  5. Present the vocabulary list for Primer encuentro, modeling the Spanish words and expressions.
  6. Have students work in small groups to discuss the Conexión personal questions and complete the chart in Antes de leer. Ask students to consider why extraterrestrials are usually depicted as unsightly. Ask each group to summarize their discussion for the class. Encourage students to use the vocabulary just presented.
ASSIGNMENT
  1. Read Antes de leer and study Vocabulario for Primer encuentro.
  2. Read Primer encuentro.
  3. Decide whether the ending was a surprise or not. List the details that made the surprise ending logical and a consistent outcome (Análisis literario) or list the details and conventions that helped you predict the ending (Estrategia de lectura).
  4. Prepare the Después de leer activities for Primer encuentro for the next class.
  5. Continue preparing the activities for Enfoques from the ENFOQUES web site, to be submitted electronically before class on Day 5.

  1. Do the exercises for Estructura 11.1 and Estructura 11.2 on the ENFOQUES CD-ROM.
