IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES
  1. Direct students’ attention to Sobre el autor. Ask them how Vallejo’s proclivity for complexity is seen in Masa.
  2. Have students read the poem aloud. Ask them to paraphrase the last line of each stanza in different ways (Análisis literario and Estrategia de lectura). Have students compare the effect of Vallejo’s original line and the effect of their paraphrases.
  3. Work through Después de leer activities 1, 2, and 3 for Masa with the class. Follow the suggestions in the annos in the IAE to ask students what audience Vallejo is trying to reach and what the poem’s ideas are regarding the masses and social solidarity.
  4. If possible, play for students Daniel Viglietti’s version of Masa set to music. (The album Canciones para mi América is available on CD.)
ASSIGNMENT
  1. Prepare Después de leer activities 4 and 5 for Masa for the next class. Do activity 5 in writing.
  2. Continue preparing the Literatura activity from the VENTANAS web site to be submitted electronically before class on Day 6.
