Day 2

IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES
  1. Direct students’ attention to Sobre el autor. Ask them how the demystification of cultural icons is carried out in El avaro.
  2. Ask students whether they had prior knowledge that helped or hindered with their understanding of the story (Estrategia de lectura). Discuss their knowledge of misers, obsession with gold, and other topics that may come up.
  3. Work through Después de leer activities 1 and 2 for El avaro with the class. Follow the anno in the IAE to ask students how the main character became obsessed with money.
  4. Put students in pairs for Después de leer activity 3 for El avaro. Follow the anno in the IAE to have students discuss “the grass is always greener on the other side.” Ask pairs to summarize their discussion for the class.
  5. Collect and correct the paragraphs students wrote for Después de leer activity 4 for El avaro.
ASSIGNMENT
  1. Read Antes de leer for La prodigiosa tarde de Baltazar.
  2. Study the Vocabulario for La prodigiosa tarde de Baltazar.
  3. Use the Internet or the library to learn more about Gabriel García Márquez and magic realism.
  4. Continue preparing the Literatura activity from the VENTANAS web site to be submitted electronically before class on Day 6.
