Day 1

IN-CLASS ACTIVITIES
  1. Ask for volunteers to read aloud their paragraphs explaining their feelings about/opinions on either the quote or the painting on the Literatura section opener for Lección 5. Use the suggestions found in Additional Teaching Suggestions for Lecturas in the Instructor’s Resource Manual to direct/expand the discussion. Ask students how the quote and picture tie into the lesson theme, La salud y el bienestar.
  2. Present the vocabulary list for Biografía, modeling the Spanish words and expressions.
  3. Discuss the Conexión personal questions in Antes de leer with the class. Encourage students to use the vocabulary just presented. Have students fill out the chart and then work in pairs to compare their answers and to determine why they follow orders from some people and give orders to others. (See the anno in the IAE more details on this extension.)
  4. Have students read Biografía aloud.
  5. Direct students’ attention to Sobre el autor. Ask them to which period of Celaya’s career they would expect Biografía to belong.
  6. Ask students to divide Biografía into four stanzas. Have them identify the main subject of each stanza.
ASSIGNMENT
  1. Study the Vocabulario for Biografía.
  2. Read Antes de leer and Biografía.
  3. Decide on the speaker’s attitude toward each command (Análisis literario) and compare your own attitudes and reactions (Estrategia de lectura).
  4. Prepare the Después de leer activities for Biografía for the next class.
  5. Go to the VENTANAS web site and prepare the Literatura activity to be submitted electronically before class on Day 4.
